A number of firearms and bomb parts have been found during searches in Co Monaghan.

Detectives and sniffer dogs searching premises in the Scotstown area found AK47 assault rifles, mortars and detonators.

The searches are part of an ongoing operation targeting dissident republicans along the border.

Last Wednesday a 43-year-old man was arrested in Scotstown under Section 30, Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

He was brought before a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court on Saturday, where he was charged with IRA membership and remanded in custody.
