The Big Apple may be open again for ferrets, as the city is set to reconsider its ban on the animal.

Judging that ferrets posed no more risk than any other pets, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will urge the repeal of the ban instituted under former mayor Rudy Giuliani in 1999. The animals were banished due to fears of rabies infections and attacks on children.

Giuliani famously defended his administration against the protestations of a ferret activist on his weekly radio show, saying, “There’s something deranged about you... You should go consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist."

Before the ban can be repealed, the decisions will go to the city's Board of Health, which will begin consideration in the Autumn.

The New York Times reports that the move was prompted by a ferret enthusiast who, upon noticing de Blasio's strong stance on animal welfare, petitioned the city to remove the ban.

Here's a recording of the radio show where Giuliani receives an unwelcome call from the executive president of New York Ferret’s Rights Advocacy group.
