Gardai in Waterford are continuing to question a man in connection with a fatal stabbing on the grounds of a psychiatric hospital in Waterford last night.
A woman - believed to be in her early 50's - died after she was attacked on the grounds of St Otterans psychiatric hospital. A man believed to be a long term patient at the hospital was arrested on the hospital grounds.
The HSE has confirmed that one person died, while another resident and staff suffered injuries.
A post mortem is due to be carried out on the woman's body later today.
Independent Cllr Mary Roche says it's come as a shock to the area as St Otterans is based in a very quiet residential area.
“We’re living in a residential area. I suppose it’s a mile from the city centre, very quiet,” Roche said.
“I don’t think it would have seen any incidents like this in the past, I mean the hospital has been there certainly as long as anyone in the city can remember and there hasn’t been anything like this before to my knowledge,” Roche added.
