Spain's conservative party has made gains in the general election following Brexit fears.

According to an exit poll for Spanish television station TVE, the incumbent Popular Party, led by caretaker Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, has finished stronger than the original election in December, though it is still short of a majority.

The party is looking to finish on 137 seats, short of the 176 needed for an overall majority.

The far-left coalition Unidos Podemos is set to get 71 seats, the same as December. The Socialists come in at 85 seats, down from 90.

This election was called following failed attempts by the country's parties to agree a government following elections in December.

All eyes will now be on coalition negotiations, with political leaders under more pressure this time to form some sort of government and avoid a third round of elections.
