The former Garda Confidential Recipient has slammed the political opposition for revealing parts of a confidential discussion held with a garda.

Oliver Connolly says the 'posturing' of politicians who revealed experts of taped conversations has trampled on the rights of him and his family.

He has said he will not confirm if the excerpts read into the Dáil record are accurate.

After maintaining silence for the last fortnight, Mr. Connolly has launched a bitter attack on the political opposition, and has given his backing to the Minister who sacked him.

He has said the opposition have trampled over his Constitutional rights to privacy by releasing what are alleged to be parts of the conversations he has held with several garda whistleblowers.

He says the conversations he held with Maurice McCabe - and with another female garda - were selectively revealed in an effort to discredit him and the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter.

He says politicians need to be aware of the previous Constitutional cases which found that people have a guaranteed right to privacy - and that some politicians should know better than to give exposure to what he claims is an unlawful recording.

He says he believed both conversations were held in confidence, and did not know he was apparently recorded by Mr. McCabe. Nor does he appear to have expected his conversation with the female garda to have been released to Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness.

Regarding the controversial conversation with Alan Shatter, he says he will not comment and says only that he discharged his duty as he was required.

However his backing for Minister Shatter is guarded he has refused to confirm that the transcript of his conversation with Mr. McCabe is true.

He says he will maintain the confidentiality of his office, even if nobody else is but that he remains an enthusiastic supporter of the Minister.

He says he wishes him well with his continued reformation of the justice system and wants him to make policing a priority now that the Troika have left Ireland.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny says he hopes Mr. Connolly will make himself available to cooperate with the independent inquiry being organised by senior counsel Sean Guerin.
