Government rejects Scotland’s threat of “enforcement action”

The Government has rejected the Scottish Government’s threat of “enforcement action” against Irish fishing vessels in disputed seas between the two countries.

It centres on the area around Rockall – an uninhabited rock some 400km west of the Donegal coast.

Ownership of the rock has long been in dispute between Ireland and the UK; however, Irish fishing vessels have operated there for decades under the Common Fisheries Policy which provides all EU member states with equal access to Union waters.

The dispute re-surfaced after the UK voted to leave the EU and has been the subject of ongoing talks between officials from both Governments over the past two years.

Irish woman among 17 killed in Dubai bus crash

The Irish woman who died in a bus crash in Dubai yesterday has been named locally as Fiona Geraghty from North County Dublin.

The 27-year-old teacher from Balbriggan was one of 17 people killed when the bus smashed into a motorway warning sign at around 6pm local time (1pm Irish time) yesterday.

It is understood her boyfriend, who is from Lanesboro in County Longford, is being treated for injuries.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is aware of the case and is ready to provide consular assistance if needed.

Flanagan “regrets” burial of woman without friend’s knowledge

The Justice Minister says the case of a Direct Provision resident who was buried by the State without any of her friends' knowledge will not be repeated.

Sylva Tukula, a transgender woman in her 30s who was living in an all-male Galway centre, died last August.

After her next-of-kin could not be contacted, she was buried last month without a ceremony or her friends being told.

The Department of Justice has claimed this was due to a “breakdown in communication”.

Ana Kriegel trial hears closing speeches

The prosecuting barrister in the Ana Kriegel trial has asked the jurors to approach the evidence in the case "coldly and clinically".

Closing speeches are now underway in the trial of two boys accused of murdering the 14-year-old schoolgirl in Dublin last year.

After the jurors were told this morning that Boy B's barrister was not going into evidence, prosecuting barrister Brendan Grehan then took to his feet to address them for a final time - some six weeks after he opened the case.

He said the case in short is that both boys lied to Gardaí when they were investigating Ana Kriegel's disappearance on May 14th last year.
