Talks are taking place between ESB management and unions aimed at averting industrial action. The ESB group of unions is due to serve strike notice on the company tomorrow which could result in power outages next month.

The row centres on a dispute over a €1.6 billion hole in the ESB pension scheme.

Unions say if they are given reassurance then the action can be avoided. Without a breakthrough, widespread power cuts will happen from December 16th.

General-Secretary of the ESB group of unions Brendan Ogle says he is more hopeful that a resolution can be reached.

Speaking earlier to Clare FM, the Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte insisted the workers' pension scheme is robust, and that there is no need for concern.
