The justice minister says it is time to address the fact that the majority of work in the home continues to fall to women.
Speaking at a major conference on gender equality in Dublin, Frances Fitzgerald says unpaid caring duties still fall disproportionately to women.
She says it is time to examine the provision in the Constitution, which protects a woman's place in the home.
She says Article 41.2 needs to be reconsidered.
The event, which is being organised by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and the National Women's Council of Ireland, is also discussing a range of women's rights issues.
It is also focusing on issues like violence against women.
