Despite tens of thousands turning out to protest against water charges today, the Taoiseach has stated that he has not prepared to drop the charges.

Enda Kenny stated at the Fine Gael Presidential Dinner that without water charges the tax cuts in the Budget would be wiped out, according to RTÉ.

He went further to claim that the top rate of tax would have to be increased by 4% if the charges were not introduced.

Mr Kenny stated that the Government were listening to concerns and would bring clarity to the issue and that they would ensure the country's water supply system is improved.

Over a hundred thousand people marched through towns, villages and cities across the country today, calling on the Government to abolish water charges.

The Right 2 Water campaign has been described as the largest public demonstration, in the lifetime of this Government.

More than 90 seperate rallies were held nationwide today, with the first getting underway in Dublin from 11am.
