A 29-year-old woman, along with her pet pig, was removed from an American Airlines flight after the animal began defecating and squealing, distressing other passengers.

Rachel Boerner was heading home to see her family for Thanksgiving, and brought her 36-kilo pet Hobey for emotional support.

The pair had already passed a number of security checks before the incident on the plane, which resulted in both being escorted out of the cabin by airline stewards.

Rob Phelps, 65, a fellow passenger spoke to the Daily Mail:

"It was ridiculous. It started to smell and flight attendants told her to clean the mess up.

"I have seen dogs and cats in cages on a plane - but never a pig. This was not a small pig. When she held it over her shoulder it reached her waist.

"I don't even know how it got through. You have the TSA and intense security and yet it still was let on board."

In 2012, the US Department of Transportation created guidelines for animals which can be taken on board planes for emotional support, which include pigs, dogs and miniature horses.
