Emirates has trialled a new system of COVID-19 testing for passengers before they board the plane.

The airline said passengers on a flight from Dubai to Tunisia were all tested before departure this morning.

The “quick blood test” was carried out in the group check-in area with results available within ten minutes.

The airline said it is the first to conduct on-site rapid testing for the virus among passengers.

Emirates CEO Adel Al Redha said the testing process went “smoothly.”

“We are working on plans to scale up testing capabilities in the future and extend it to other flights,” he said.

“This will enable us to conduct on-site tests and provide immediate confirmation for Emirates passengers travelling to countries that require COVID-19 test certificates.

“The health and safety of staff and passengers at the airport remain of paramount importance.”

The tests were carried out by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

DHA Director-General Humaid Al Qutami said: “We are glad to work with Emirates on the successful implementation of rapid COVID-19 testing at the airport for departing travellers.

“We believe strongly that the most effective solutions require close partnerships with other public and private sector organisations.”

The airline’s check-in and boarding process has been adapted to allow for social distancing, with Gloves, masks and hand sanitisers have been made mandatory for all employees at Dubai airport.

Passengers are now required to wear their own masks at the airport and on the plane, while also following social distancing.

Meanwhile, magazines and brochures will no longer be available on-board and the packaging of in-flight food and drink is to be modified to minimise contact.

Cabin baggage is not being accepted and carry-on items are now limited to laptops, handbags, briefcases or baby items.

The planes will also undergo deep cleaning and disinfection every time they return to Dubai.
