Raju is an elephant who has been chained, beaten and abused for over 50 years in India.
He was forced to survive off scraps of food he found and often fed on paper and plastic that was littered on the ground to fill his stomach.

After years of torture, Raju was rescued last week in a daring midnight rescue mission by North-London based charity, Wildlife SOS.
When Raju stepped off Wildlife SOS's truck, the rescue team were astounded when they noticed tears stream from Raju's eyes.

Elephants are deeply emotional and intelligent creatures who often exhibit a variety of behaviors including those associated with happiness, sadness, grief, self-awareness and language. Their large hippocampus, a brain structure in the limbic system, allows them to process emotions.
The charity has since launched a campaign to raise £10,000 to help begin Raju's new life in an enclosure that will allow him to roam free with his new adoptive family.
