Electricians at St. James' Hospital in Dublin have gone on strike in a row over health and safety at the hospital.
The Technical Engineering and Electrical Union (TEEU) say a number of their colleagues have been suspended because they locked electrical panels to stop unqualified people from accessing them.
The hospital has moved to reassure patients that there will be no disruption to hospital services despite the action.
'Our members took safety measures'
TEEU General-Secretary is Eamon Devoy.
"Our members took these safety measures to ensure that they had safe systems of work and their colleagues had a safe place of work consistent with Health and Safety legislation" he said.
"The TEEU has agreed to attend Labour Court talks with a view to resolving the dispute, but Management has refused to do so, despite repeated requests from the Labour Relations Commission" he added.
The TEEU says it has applied for an all-out picket and other unions at hospital are currently balloting members.
It says emergency cover will be provided during the dispute.
