An elderly man has died after he was knocked down in Co Mayo early this morning.

The man in his 60s was hit by a van on the Ballycastle Road in Killala at 3.30am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road is blocked to traffic at Palmerstown Bridge on the Ballycastle to Killala road, and road diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
