Tributes are pouring in for Dylan McCarthy who has died in hospital after a serious assault in County Kildare on Sunday night.

The 29-year-old from Kilmallock in County Limerick had been on life support at Tallaght Hospital since the attack on the Dublin road in Monasterevin at around 12:30am.

His father was also seriously injured in the attack and remains in hospital.

A post-mortem examination will take place today and Gardaí are continuing to call for witnesses to come forward.

In a statement, Dylan’s local club Kilmallock GAA offered its heartfelt sympathies to Dylan’s family and friends.

Good man

The club said Dylan played football at underage level and hurling from underage up to the under-21s.

“He was a huge addition to any team and a real team player always,” it said.

“To Eamon, Marita and Orla, Dylan's partner Aoife, extended family and friends we are sorry for your great loss. We will remember Dylan always.”

The club finished with a quote inspired by Mitch Albom’s ‘The Five People You Meet in Heaven’:

“There is no fairness in life and death. If there was, no good men would die young.”

"Heart-breaking"

Kilmallock Cllr PJ Carey told Newstalk the area is in shock after the attack.

“This is heart-breaking for the family,” he said.

“The mother especially would have a lot of ties in the area, a big family, so huge condolences and the deepest of sympathies to the McCarthy family.

“Obviously, we are all hoping that his father gets better as well as he is in hospital.”

Investigation

In a statement, Gardaí said the results of today’s post-mortem would determine the course of their investigation.

They said Dylan was injured in an “altercation involving a group of people at the entrance of a premises” in the Kildare town.

Investigators are urging anyone who was in the Dublin Street area of Monasterevin between 12.15am and 12.45am to contact them.

They are particularly interested in talking to drivers who were in the area and may have dash-cam footage.
