Dunnes Stores have recalled a batch of rice due to contamination with insects. A batch of 1 kilo bags of Dunnes Stores own brand rice, ‘My family favourites: Easy cook rice’, is contaminated with rice weevils.

The contaminated batch is 14 122; best before: 02/05/2016.

What are rice weevils?

Rice weevils are a form of beetle and are roughly 4mm in length. Though they aren’t known to cause any harm to humans they can be destructive to crops such as rice and wheat.

Female rice weevils can lay four eggs per day, and up to 300 in her lifetime. They lay the eggs inside the rice before sealing the grain. The larvae will then eat the grain from the inside out. A telltale sign of weevil infestation is exit holes in rice grains, from adult weevils emerging following the completion of this process.
