Dublin Zoo is to reopen tomorrow, with no more than 500 visitors allowed on site at a time.

Zoo opening times will initially be split into two daily sessions, with management saying the 1,000 visitor daily limit is only 10% of their usual capacity.

There will be a one-way outdoor walking route through the zoo, while hand sanitizers have also been installed around the site.

Internal animal houses, enclosed viewing spaces, retail spaces and playgrounds will remain closed.

The restrictions a number of animals - such as wolves, hippos and the red pandas - will not be viewable, but visitors will be able to see the "majority of the animals".

In a statement, Director of Dublin Zoo Leo Oosterweghel said the initial reopening is a trial period.

He explained: "We have worked hard to ensure Dublin Zoo can once again reopen to the public, but health and safety come first, and we ask all visitors to bear that in mind when coming to see us.

"We would also like to strongly advise anyone considering a visit to Dublin Zoo that they check current government travel restrictions to ensure they are abiding by them."

The zoo - which has been closed to the public since mid-March - is also stressing that all tickets need to be pre-booked online.
