Though Sinn Féin held a tight lead until the third count, candidate Paul Donnelly was eliminated on the fifth count.

Ruth Coppinger took 12,334 votes in the sixth count, and Fianna Fáil's David McGuinness was eliminated on 9,237 votes.

Deputy Coppinger spoke to Newstalk's moments after her confirmation:

Fine Gael's Eamonn Coghlan was eliminated after the third count:

Junior coalition party Labour had a dismal showing in the constituency. They were beaten into last place of the main parties, with even the Green Party outpolling them. Sinn Féin and Independents have made major gains.

Results at a glance

In the Dublin West By-election, there was an electorate of 63,521. The returning officer announced a quota of 14,478 after a valid poll of 28,955.

After the distribution of Sinn Feín candidate Paul Donnelly's 7,028 fifth round votes - following his elimination - Ruth Coppinger was on 12,334, while Fianna Fáil's David McGuinness was on 9,237.

The returning officer declared David McGuinness to be eliminated and Ruth Coppinger elected on those results.

Earlier, Independent David Hall was eliminated after the fourth count, while Eamonn Coghlan, Fine Gael was eliminated after the third count.

Adams gives thanks

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has thanked voters for supporting the party:

Despite his elimination, David Hall felt the results contained a hopeful message:

Meanwhile, Fine Gael's Gabrielle McFadden has taken the seat vacated by her late sister Nicky in the Longford Westmeath By-election.

Local elections

Labour are suffering too in the local election results - with just four seats out of the just over 202 filled so far.

Fine Gael too are suffering, though not to the same extent.

Approaching midnight on Saturday, the local election picture looks like this.

European seats

In the European elections, counting won't take place until tomorrow - but Sinn Féin will top the poll in the capital and are also in place for seats in Ireland South and Midlands North West.

Fine Gael could be in trouble in the capital but will take a seat in the other two constituencies, with a possible second in Ireland South.

Luke Ming Flanagan will top the poll in Midlands North West and secure a seat.
