Water restrictions due to take effect in parts of Dublin this weekend have been postponed by the City Council.

The measures were due to come into place from 9am tomorrow until 3pm, and to be repeated on Friday.

But a spokeswoman for Dublin City Council told Newstalk these have been deferred until Sunday.

Earlier there was public outcry over the proposals with the Restaurant Association of Ireland (RAI) claiming that they would have resulted in a loss of an estimated €5-€10,000 of revenue per restaurant.

The Council say they acknowledge the concerns of businesses and consumers and are also conscious of the high footfall in the area.

They say the RAI has been informed of the decision and that they will be going door-to-door with an information leaflet drop tomorrow.

The Council add that while this work cannot be completed at night time due to noise concerns, they hope to start work early Sunday morning.

The restrictions will affect Merrion Row, St. Stephen's Green, Grafton Street to Ely Place, and the west side of Dawson Street to Molesworth Street.
