Donegal scientist to collect Nobel prize for medicine

A Donegal man will receive his Nobel prize for medicine this evening.

Dr William C Campbell learned in October that he would be given the award for his work in tackling infections linked to roundworm.

Millions of people worldwide benefit from his work each year.

He is one of three winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine.

In a statement, the Nobel committee said: "The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2015 was divided, one half jointly to William C Campbell and Satoshi Omura 'for thier discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites' and the other half to Youyou Tu 'for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against Malaria'".

Currently affiliated with Drew University in New Jersey, Dr Campbell graduated with first class honours in zoology from Trinity College Dublin in 1952.
