The appointment of Joe McHugh as Gaeltacht affairs minister has been criticised after it was revealed yesterday that his knowledge of the Irish language is “a bit rusty”.
The Donegal North East TD, who will be responsible for Irish-speaking communities, is said to have enrolled in a language course in an effort to address his lack of fluency.
Former Gaeltacht minister Eamon O’Cuiv described the appointment as a ‘slap in the face’ for Gaeltacht communities.
