With Halloween fast approaching, Newstalk took a trip to one of Ireland’s most haunted locations to try and make contact with one of three famous spirits rumoured to live there.

Clonony Castle was built in 1490 and was gifted to Thomas Boleyn by Britain’s King Henry VII when he wanted to marry his daughter Anne Boleyn.

Anne’s nieces Mary and Elizabeth Boleyn fled to the castle after her execution and lived out the rest of their lives there.

Their tombstone still stands on the castle grounds and their spirits are said to reside there alongside the castle guardian – a medieval soldier dressed in full armour.

Newstalk reporter Orlagh Doherty travelled to the castle with the paranormal investigation team from PSI Ireland and three mediums to try and make contact with the other side.

Richard from PSI Ireland said the team uses SLS (Structured Light Sensor) cameras and EMF (Electro-Magnetic Field) readers to try and capture images that are beyond the human eye.

“We are looking for any figures that could pop up so if I point this at somebody in the crowd you can see the little stick figure where they pop up,” he said.

“It is picking up on the movement and figures of the people here. If we point it to an empty area and we see that little stick man, we know a spirit is around”

It wasn’t long until the equipment picked up on something strange.

“This is an image that was caught in the fireplace directly in front of the SLS camera,” said Richard.

“Whatever electromagnetic energy was there, I managed to catch it with a slow exposure in the direction of where the SLS was pointing.

“It is a clear facial image trying to interact with us or show itself. That backs up the fact that the SLS camera was picking up some sort of electromagnetic energy there so we would class that as a definite capture of a spiritual entity trying to make contact of some sort.”

Next up it was time for the séance – and that is where things got really spooky. You can listen back as Orlagh comes face to face with the castle guardian himself … and lives to tell the tale.
