The deputy state pathologist Dr Khalid Jaber has resigned after openly criticising his boss.

Letters published in the Irish Independent showed Dr Jaber questioning whether the state pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, was qualified to do her job.

He had argued that he had travelled to the United States for extra qualifications, while Dr Cassidy had not.

The Department of Justice has now confirmed that Dr Jaber has resigned from his post with immediate effect.
