Deadpool has become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time worldwide, with over $745m (€664m) in box office receipts.
The Ryan Reynolds hit overtook previous number one The Matrix Reloaded this weekend, with the Wachowskis’ sequel grossing $742m in receipts in 2003.
The success has been hailed all the more remarkable after the film was not handed a release slot in China, the world’s second-largest box office.
Experts are now predicting a new wave of comic book movies aimed at adults, and Hugh Jackman’s next movie under the Wolverine franchise may be one of the first to follow that trend.
A sequel to Deadpool is also expected to go into production with reports from Hollywood stating that the studio is already working on a follow-up.
Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice has also had a strong box office showing despite mixed reviews, and has also been confirmed that the DVD version of the movie will feature an R-rated cut when it is released in the summer of 2016.
