A day of action will take place across Dublin today to highlight the homelessness crisis in the city.

Last month 770 adults with 1,185 children were homeless in Dublin, with Dublin City Council expected to spend €55m on homeless services this year.

Sinn Féin has identified several sites where council houses can be built, and is calling on the Government 'to release the funding and let building commence as soon as possible'.

Protests will be held today in Ballyfermot, Ballymun, Tyrellstown, Blanchardstown, Darndale, and O'Devaney Gardens & Croke Villas in Dublin Central.

Chair of Dublin City Council's housing committee, Daithí Doolan, has organised today's protests;

Figures from the Dublin Region Homeless Executive released this week show that, on a daily basis, staff in the Dublin Local Authority placement services are making in excess of 200 emergency placements in the Dublin Region.

In a statement, the Department of the Environment said Minister Alan Kelly, "is aware of the level of public concern in relation to homeless families and the ending of involuntary long-term homelessness by the end of 2016 is a key objective of this Government."
