The Dáil has begun debating a motion on water charges, which could see the first major test of the Government's strength in the house.

The motion from four opposition parties calls for Irish Water to be abolished, and for domestic water charges to be immediately scrapped.

Both the government and Fianna Fáil have tabled their own counter-motions, but the government could face a tough test in the vote tomorrow night.

Sinn Fein TD Eoin Ó Broin said if Fianna Fáil really wanted rid of water charges, it would support Sinn Féin's motion.

Earlier, the minister with responsibility for the charge Simon Coveney claimed the State would face immediate costs of up to €160m if Irish Water was scrapped.

His comments came after an uncertain 24 hours over the water charges.

Independent TD and Minister of State John Halligan will now support the Government, after earlier suggesting yesterday he might side with the opposition.

While Fanna Fáil has refused to support the motion calling for the abolition of the charges.
