A custody hearing to decide whether or not the family of a Limerick man, killed in the US, can raise his children in Ireland, has been adjourned until next week.

The hearing had gotten underway in North Carolina yesterday, but will now not resume until next Thursday.

39-year old Jason Corbett died earlier this month, after sustaining critical head injuries in an alleged domestic incident at his home in North Carolina.

His wife Molly Martens, who is reported to be a suspect along with her father Thomas Martens, is fighting Mr Corbett's sister Tracey Lynch for custody of 10-year-old Jack Corbett and his eight-year-old sister Sarah.

The children's mother, Mags Fitzpatrick, died following an asthma attack in 2006.

Mr Corbett's family in Limerick said they were 'distraught' after news filtered through last night of the adjournment.

Jason Corbett's body was flown home from the United States earlier this week, and he will be buried next to his first wife.

Dave Lynch, Jason's brother-in-law and close friend, said the family "have grave concerns for the health and well being of these children".

Dave and his wife Tracey are named in Mr Corbett's will as guardians for the children, should anything happen to him.
