The median age of patients who die from the coronavirus in Ireland is now 82 years.

This is in sharp contrast to the median age of confirmed cases, which is just 48 years.

The median age of those who have died has fluctuated so far this week from 86 on Monday to 84 on Tuesday.

Figures from the National Public Health Emergency Team on the coronavirus show there are now 3,447 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

On Wednesday there were 14 more deaths and 212 new cases. It brings the death toll here to 85.

Some 834 cases (28%) have been hospitalised, while 126 patients were admitted to ICU.

752 cases (25%) are associated with healthcare workers,

Dublin has the highest number of cases at 1,645 (55% of all cases), followed by Cork with 255 cases (8%).

Of those for whom transmission status is known community transmission accounts for 51%, close contact is 26% and travel abroad accounts for 23%.

It comes as research from the Department of Health shows that 65% of people in Ireland are interacting with family and friends through digital means.

A nationally representative online survey of 1,270 adults was conducted on Wednesday.

It reveals 89% believe current social distancing measures are appropriate, while 94% are "confident" in their ability to keep to the new restrictions.

Some 85% of people feel they have adapted to changes since COVID-19, and know the steps to take if they develop symptoms.

The research suggests that one in three people are worried about their health, with three out of four worried about the health of their families and friends.

Two-thirds of people are conversing with family and friend’s by using phone and internet.
