The Court of Appeal will hear an application to legally challenge the result of the Marriage Referendum today.

It comes after the High Court refused leave to Gerry Walshe, an electrician from Lisdeen Road, Co Clare and Maurice Lyons, a gardener with an address at Callan, Co Kilkenny - to lodge proceedings against the vote.

The two argued that the Referendum had not been conducted in the correct manner.

The Government had hoped to have the required legislation through the houses of the Oireachtas before the summer recess - however it can't take any action until the court proceedings have been dealt with.
