A retrial has been ordered for a former senior executive of Anglo Irish Bank.

Tiarnan O'Mahoney of Glen Pines, Enniskerry in Co Wicklow was released from jail last month following a successful appeal of his original convictions.

Last summer, Mr O'Mahoney was found guilty of furnishing false information and conspiring to defraud Revenue - as well as conspiring to delete accounts from Anglo's system.

The accounts in question were in the name of a man with links to a senior figure at the bank, and he was jailed for three years.

However, the 56-year-old walked free from prison following a successful appeal last month.

Today the Court of Appeal was asked to order a retrial.

Brendan Grehan, senior counsel for the 56-year-old, objected by asking the court to consider the considerable time since the alleged offences, his good character, the consequences suffered following the original conviction and the fact he has already served time behind bars.

The prospect of facing another trial would be "unfair" he argued.

However, the three-judge panel disagreed and granted the State's application for a retrial.
