Britain's High Court has ordered that the remains of Richard III be buried in a cathedral in Leicester, near where they were uncovered two years ago.

Descendants and supporters of the oft-maligned monarch had campaigned to have him moved to York, after which his royal house was named.

As the he last of the Plantagenet royals, Richard's death at the Battle of Bosworth Field marked the beginning of the Tudor dynasty in England.

In 2012 his remains were found during the building of a car park, and were later verified using DNA technology.

The decision to bury him in Leicester was made by the university archaeological team that found him. But objections by the 'Plantagenet Alliance' - which was formed by Richard's 16th great-grandson - brought the matter to the High Court, which decided that there were "no public law grounds for the court interfering with the decisions in question".
