Cathay Pacific has admitted it made a mistake when it sold business-class tickets at a huge discount.

However, the Hong Kong-based airline said it would honour the tickets on flights from Vietnam to New York.

Customers paid US$675 (€594) for a return flight in August, for a fare that usually costs around US$16,000 (€14,092).

The company said: "Happy 2019 all, and to those who bought our good - VERY good surprise 'special' on New Year's Day.

"Yes - we made a mistake but we look forward to welcoming you on board with your ticket issued."

In a tweet it used the hashtag '#lessonlearnt'.

People on the social media site appeared to praise the airline for the decision.

One user wrote: "Two rarities: An airline honoring mistakenly discounted tickets AND a company owning up to its mistake. Well done!"

Another said: "In a world where airlines get a bad rep (and its often justified), its refreshing to see one honor their promises and do the right thing."

Another added: "Well done @cathaypacific - I’m putting more money your way. Cause I like your style".

The error came to light after travel blogger Gary Leff wrote about his surprise at finding the fares.

He also screenshot what he found, writing: "Even if you book an award ticket to Asia and use this as a one way ticket to get back (and throw away the return) you come out way way ahead."

It is not known how many tickets were sold.

The carrier operates non-stop flights between Dublin and Hong Kong.
