Burkina Faso's state television has gone off the air. It comes after gunshots were heard at the broadcaster's headquarters.

According to BBC reports, witnesses said soldiers fired in the air to disperse protesters and forced the station's journalists to flee.

Soldiers are also reported to have cleared thousands of demonstrators from a city square in the capital Ouagadougou and blocked off the area.

The country's army seized power on Friday after the resignation of president Blaise Compaore - who had served for 27 years. It followed days of protests when Mr Compaore attempted to extend his term in office.

Army chiefs have backed Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida as interim leader, saying he was "chosen unanimously to lead the transition period".

However, opposition leaders have warned against army interference, saying in a statement that "the victory born from this popular uprising belongs to the people, and the task of managing the transition falls by right to the people. In no case can it be confiscated by the army."
