The incident is being investigated by the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission.

At around midnight the senior garda went to the front door of his home after a family member was alerted by a noise.

At the door he was confronted by three youths.

A bottle was thrown at the officer and he sustained a cut to the back of the head.

The three teens ran off. At that point, on-duty gardaí and a search helicopter were called in.

Around an hour later an 18-year-old was found unconscious close to a nearby stream, he was later pronounced dead. It is believed he sustained fatal injuries after climbing along a high fence and ending up in a stream.

A post mortem will carried out.

These locals told WLR News they are shocked:

Mayor of Waterford Damien Geoghegan also spoke to WLR News:

A senior investigator from the Ombudsman Commission, and a team has been at the scene since early this morning. They are carrying out a scene investigation.

Garda Ombudsman statement

Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has issued a statement, to confirm its investigation of the death.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission received a referral at 1:59am on Friday 16 May 2014 from the Garda Síochána, in accordance with section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act (2005).

This is a case in Co. Waterford in which an 18 year old man has died. The death occurred some hours previously, following the response of gardaí to an incident in a housing estate in Dungarvan.

A team of GSOC investigators is in Dungarvan since the early hours of this morning and the investigation is underway.

Anyone with information can contact GSOC at 1890 600 800.

Garda investigation

It is now thought the house of the senior garda was not deliberately targeted.

The three suspects are being questioned at Waterford City garda station.

The focus of garda inquiries at the moment is on the activity of the group of youths before the confrontation.

The Garda himself - who is a married father of two - is said to be very shaken by the incident.
