A boy (15) has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of school teacher Ann Maguire in Britain.

The family of Ann Maguire (61) arrived at a court in Leeds, where the pupil accused of her murder appeared.

Relatives of the woman, who was attacked in front of her students, are attending the 15-year-old's appearance at Leeds Youth Court.

Earlier, her family described her as a "shining light who brightened the world for so many".

In a moving tribute, they described her as "a loving wife, the best mother, a treasured sister (and) a true friend", adding: "This horrific happening has robbed us of all of this and so much more.

"We are devastated. Her selfless, genuine, caring nature will remain with us eternally".

Mrs. Maguire was head of Year 11 at the school for more than 10 years. This year she had moved to working a four-day week, ahead of her planned retirement in five months' time.

Steve Mort, the school's headteacher, has praised students for their handling of Mrs. Maguire's death.

He also thanked the public, many of whom have laid flowers among the hundreds of bouquets left by students at the school gates, for their "overwhelming" support.

"I'm immensely proud to be headteacher at Corpus Christi" Mr. Mort said.

"Our children have proven themselves to be great ambassadors for the school. I want to pay particular tribute to them and to the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by our staff at this very difficult time".

Peter Mann is from the Crown Prosecution Service.
