The army bomb squad has been called to deal with a security alert near Derry.

It has been claimed that an explosive device has been left in the Currynierin area.

A number of homes in Conway Park have been evacuated and local access has been closed.

Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan, the Foyle Area Commander, said in a statement that “it is unlikely that the people who have been asked to leave their home at Conway Park will be able to return tonight.

"We have also had to close off access between Ardmore Road and other parts of the Currynierin Estate," he added.
