An Army Bomb Disposal Team has been called out to deal with a mortar shell found on the banks of the Shannon in Limerick city centre.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who reported a suspicious object on the shore near O'Callaghan's Strand.

It is understood the shell dates from the War of Independence era.

The device still contained explosive material. It is being brought to a secure military area where it will be destroyed by controlled explosion.
