BMW last night announced the arrival of the new 2 Series Gran Tourer. This will be a very practical addition to the 2 Series range. The car itself measures in at 4,556mm in length, 1800mm wide and 1,608mm high. The luggage capacity in the vehicle can be extended from 645 to 805 litres. With the seats folded down this space rises to a very practical 1,905 litres. Those who need more space in their car will be happy to hear that this model will also be available with seven seats – a first for the premium compact segment.

BMW tells us that five newly developed turbo engines with three and four cylinders will be available with this Gran Tourer. The manufacturer informs us that these engines will offer "superb efficiency". We are also told that the 220d xDrive will be the only car in its class to team four-wheel drive with seven-seat capability. Other figures quoted tell us that the 220i and 220d engines will offer 0-100km/h in a spritely 7.8 seconds.

In terms of infotainment this car will use BMW ConnectedDrive technology. Debuting in the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer will be the new “myKIDIO” app. The app is said to provide content for children and families including feature films, series, audio books and audio plays – on tablets like the iPad to keep rear passengers entertained. Sadly, this app will only be available to German customers – for the moment.
