The Society of St Vincent de Paul has criticised the suggestion that bedsits could be used to alleviate the homeless crisis.

The Tánaiste Joan Burton said the ban could be lifted to open up more accommodation for people sleeping rough.

However the charity wants quality social housing to be supplied instead, and has called for rent caps to be raised.

Legislation to ban bedsits was passed five years ago amid fears that they provided unsanitary living conditions.

Brendan Hennessy from the SVP explains why bedsits are not the answer:

A national debate on homelessness has taken place following the death of Jonathan Corrie, who passed away in a doorway near the Dáil on Monday night.

The funeral of Mr Corrie took place at a Dublin crematorium yesterday.

Both the Environment Minister and the Taoiseach have pledged to provide enough emergency accommodation for everyone living on the streets by Christmas.

Yesterday it was reported that two homeless people died in Cork city centre over the past week. Both deaths are understood to be the result of drugs overdoses.
