Banking Inquiry members meeting as report deadline approaches

Members of the Banking Inquiry are meeting again today as they try to produce a final report.

Yesterday's talks wrapped up after midnight, with only seven out of 11 chapters finalised.

The inquiry has today to agree on the wording of the document if it is to be published before its legal deadline.

A legal expert will check the report on Monday and it will be sent to interested parties on Tuesday.

Over 340 amendments were tabled by members before yesterday's meeting, which had to be delayed so that staff could go over them and match together any duplicates.

Sources said most of the proposed changes are relatively small, and that there are only a handful of major amendments that members will need to consider.

It is believed some members still have concerns that the amendments will neuter the report - which will make it more difficult for them to put their names to.

Sinn Fein's Mary Lou McDonald says it remains to be seen whether the report will be of value.

She says she doesn't have much confidence is the strength of an Oireachtas inquiry, considering the scale of the banking crisis:
