A pathologist at the Coombe hospital says baby Darragh Byrne died as a result of multi-organ failure due to hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen.
Dr Colette Adida told Dublin Coroner’s Court that it was not possible to determine the exact cause of the hypoxia.
The pathologist from the Coombe also said that signs of hypoxia in some organs could have been caused days or weeks before the death.
The Dublin maternity hospital has apologised to the family for failings in baby Darragh's care.
Baby Darragh Byrne died on February 19th, 5 days after he was delivered by emergency c-section in the Coombe Hospital.
Yesterday Eoin Byrne told Dublin Coroner’s court he cried his heart out after seeing that his son was navy blue on delivery.
Counsel for the Byrnes said it was not in dispute that baby Darragh had severe hypoxia for almost 100 minutes.
Further evidence is expected to be heard from Darragh’s mother, Maree Butler, later today.
The court heard yesterday the family wanted to give evidence on the condition of Baby Darragh’s body when it was returned to them.
