The 25-year-old Australian woman found wandering by the GPO in Dublin last month has been described in the High Court as 'highly vulnerable'.
Gardai had feared the young woman was a teenage victim of child trafficking when discovered in a distressed state on O'Connell Street on October 10th.
She will remain in Health Service Executive (HSE) care until tomorrow, even though gardai are satisfied she is an adult. They established her identity after releasing her photograph to the public.
Sargeant David Gallagher of Store Street station told the court they had been assisted by a friend she had visited in Co. Tipperary for three weeks.
He said there were initial indications she has experienced psychiatric difficulties in the past.
A child psychiatrist who assessed the woman last night gave evidence to the court that while she had chosen not to speak, she had not seem disturbed.
However based on information of her drawings rather than her expression, the child psychiatrist was of the view the young woman may have been exposed to a difficult past.
Felix McEnroy SC, acting on behalf of the woman's guardian ad litem, expressed concern about the risks involved in opening the door to allow a 'vulnerable individual walk out on the street'.
Because she is an adult, Mr. Justice George Bermingham has discharged an order detaining her in HSE care under the Childcare Act.
However as a safety net, the judge has put a stay on her discharge until tomorrow morning to allow for a further scheduled psychiatric assessment this afternoon.
