An IMO Committee will consider its options today after junior doctors last night voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action.

The dispute is over working hours - with some junior doctors working up to 100 hours per-week - more than twice the EU legal limit of 48.

Any decision on strike action taken at today's meeting must be given to the HSE with two weeks notice.

The Sunday Business Post's Health Correspondent Susan Mitchell explained to Newstalk's Breakfast what's likely to follow:

97% of non-consultant hospital doctors voted in favour of action in a ballot yesterday.

Todays meeting will now set out an action plan for the strike action which will give the HSE two weeks notice.

Fianna Fail's Health Spokesperson, Billy Kelleher, says the Health Minister needs to take a hands on role in this dispute, "They (the junior doctors) want to be out there, dealing with patients and providing good health cover in our emergency departments in our hospitals across the country. They don't want to take this action, and they don't do it lightly.

"It is obviously not acceptable that we have people in our workforce who are working extraordinarily long hours that simply is something that certainly is causing difficulties for the individuals who are working with these conditions. And that's the most important thing, and they have already stated that it impacts on patient safety and on the safety of the junior doctors themselves."

The Irish Medical Organisation says it's still open to talks aimed at averting a junior doctors strike - but warned that the HSE is showing no signs of giving in to demands.

The IMO's Assistant Director of Industrial Relations - Eric Young - told Newstalk's Breakfast that his organisation's open to talks - but the HSE has shown no signs of the same.
