A new €1m fund has been established to support art and creativity through the COVID-19 crisis.
The arts and culture scheme will help over hundreds of artists, writers and musicians to create during the outbreak.
Half of the money is being put forward by the Exchequer while the Art’s Council will provide the other half.
Culture Minister Josepha Madigan said the strict COVID-19 restrictions in place around the country are having serious consequences artists and cultural organisations.
However, she said many artists are taking advantage of the extra time on their hands.
“Really, what we are trying to do is ignite that creative fire in people out there,” she said.
“We know that now space and time is really fertile opportunity for the imagination and I think artists in particular always recognise that.
“So, I think there is a real opportunity there for them to avail of this.”
She also expressed hope that the fund will encourage people to turn to the arts as a source of personal and community wellbeing through these trying times.
As part of the scheme, the Arts Council is launching a new digital platform to allow people to experience the new works in their own homes.
Council Chair Kevin Rafter said the crisis is having a huge impact on the livelihoods of everyone working in the arts.
“This new scheme is one immediate support to assist artists to make new work for the public to enjoy during this difficult time,” he said.
Proposals will be assessed based on artistic quality, the potential to engage with the public and the track record of the artist.
There is €3,000 available for each successful applicant, potentially meaning that up to 1,000 projects will be supported by the scheme.
