Anti-water charges campaigners are burning water bills during a demonstration in Limerick this afternoon.

The 'We Wont Pay' campaign are holding a bonfire outside City Hall.

It comes after the Government tabled amendments to legislation which require landlords to pay water charges if a tenant leaves without doing so, as well as measures to deduct unpaid charges from wages or social welfare payments.

Councillor Cian Prendiville from the Anti-Austerity Alliance says it will be Limerick's biggest bonfire:

Last weekend anti-water charge protesters burned their bills at a protest rally outside the GPO in Dublin on Saturday evening.

Hundreds of people gathered in a march through the city, calling for water charges to be abolished.

Earlier this week Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy said water charge protesters are on the verge of a 'big victory', amid estimates that 30% of households are yet to register.

The Tánaiste has lashed out at opposition TDs who are complaining about the handling of new changes to the laws on water charges.

Opposition parties say the Government is using sneaky tactics to try and limit debate on the plans in the Dáil next week.

But Joan Burton said yesterday the opposition have already had plenty of chances to speak out on Irish Water.
