48% of Irish adults have not visited their dentist within the past 12 months.

Almost three quarters of 35-44 year olds said they did not attend the dentist due to cost, while more than half avoided or delayed dental treatment also due to cost.

The research conducted by DeCare Dental Insurance Ireland also found that 90% of people said that unhealthy or unsightly teeth would turn them off a potential partner, while 87% agreed that bad teeth would impact on their success in a job interview.

Chief Dental Officer of DeCare Dr. Ger Gavin said the removal of PRSI cover and tax breaks for dental care has also led to one in four people attending their dentist less often.

The current Government and the one which preceded it have removed €400 million in dental support from the general public over the past four years according to the Irish Dental Association.

Dr. Gavin said: “Research has shown that Ireland’s dental health is not being prioritised as per recommended national and international guidelines, mainly due to cost, which will result in long-term damage."
