In a world where online trolls have turned the female-led Ghostbusters reboot into YouTube’s most hated movie trailer, news that Warner Bros is planning to relaunch its Ocean’s 11 franchise with an all-female lineup has mostly flown under the radar. But now that more than a third of the cast has been announced, expect think pieces and vitriol to start rolling in.

Sandra Bullock has long been linked to the project, set to be directed by The Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross and written by Olivia Milch, but now will share the screen with Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, and Mindy Kaling.

Jennifer Lawrence had been linked to the film, in preproduction under the working title Ocean’s Ocho, but has since dropped out due to reported scheduling conflicts.

Like the George Clooney-led Ocean’s franchise, Ocho will see Bullock play Danny Ocean’s sister lead a revenge-fuelled heist to nab a priceless necklace “from the Met Ball in order to frame a villainous gallery owner.”

With filming set to start in the autumn, expect the rest of the female stars to be announced in the coming weeks.
