Actor Alec Baldwin is to be charged with involuntary manslaughter over the death of a cinematographer on the set of his film Rust.

Halyna Hutchins died after a prop gun held by Baldwin was discharged during rehearsals for the western film in October 2021.

Director Joel Souza was also wounded in the incident on the film set in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Announcing the decision to file criminal charges, Santa Fe's district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said in a statement: "After a thorough review of the evidence and the laws of the state of New Mexico, I have determined that there is sufficient evidence to file criminal charges against Alec Baldwin and other members of the Rust film crew.

“On my watch, no one is above the law, and everyone deserves justice.”

Baldwin and the film's armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for weapons on set, are both facing involuntary manslaughter charges.

Meanwhile, assistant director David Halls has signed a plea agreement for the charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.

She announced the decision around three months after receiving a final report on the incident from the Santa Fe sheriff's office.
