The European Parliament will vote later on whether to force drinks companies to put information, like the number of calories in alcoholic drinks, on their labels.

If the draft resolution is approved, the European Commission could make it law.

The British Royal Society for Public Health has been campaigning on the issue.

Spokesman Duncan Stephenson thinks calorie information on beer, wine and spirits could help tackle obesity.

Last week, EU health ministers discussed the need for a new policy framework for reducing alcohol-related harm.

They confirmed that five EU Alcohol Strategy priorities - pricing and tax measures, marketing and restrictions on the availability of alcoholic beverages, legal measures to reduce drink driving, and the raising of public awareness - are still on the agenda.

An issue that rose particular interest was labelling, calorie content and adding nutritional and ingredients listings - as this is required for all other drinks.

In 2011, European institutions passed legislation that required food and soft drinks - including fruit juice and milk - to label nutritional information and ingredients.

However, alcoholic beverages were exempt.
