Aer Lingus has launched a paid wi-fi service on transatlantic flights. Customers will be able to connect to the internet with their own devices but calls will not be permitted.

The airline says studies show that most passengers prefer a 'call-free' cabin.

The new services - provided by Panasonic Avionics Corporation, Aeromobile and Deutsche Telekom - are available to customers travelling between Ireland and the US on seven Airbus A330 aircraft.

These have been fitted with satellite technology enabling high speed internet access and GSM services, including text messaging and mobile data.

Mobile phone services will also let customers send and receive text messages or e-mail, use GPRS services, browse the web and more.

Aer Lingus Chief Commercial Officer Stephen Kavanagh said "We are the third European airline to introduce internet access on transatlantic flights".

"Our aim is to enhance our customers’ Aer Lingus experience - this is yet another choice that we're offering to achieve that".

"Having direct internet access on long-haul flights to cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, will be of huge benefit to our customers, in particular to business customers" he added.

And then there is the price: the use of the unlimited wi-fi service for 1 hour is from €10.95, and €19.95 for 24 hours. While roaming charges for GSM services, SMS and mobile data will also apply.
